Dr. David McIntosh Receives the 2024 SENMC Mountain Lion PRIDE Teaching Award


(CARLSBAD, NM) Southeast New Mexico College is pleased to announce Assistant Professor of History and Anthropology, Dr. David McIntosh, as the recipient of the first ever SENMC Mountain Lion PRIDE Teaching Award.

Teachers Pictuer Dr. McIntoshDr. Kevin Beardmore, president at Southeast New Mexico College stated, “Dr. McIntosh is a worthy inaugural winner of this award.  He is a passionate teacher who shares an infectious enthusiasm for his subject matter with students.  We are very fortunate to have him at SENMC!” 

Dr. McIntosh has worked at Southeast New Mexico College since 2022 as the Assistant Professor of History and Anthropology in the Department of Social Sciences. At SENMC, he has served  on the Distance Learning Advisory Committee and the Facilities & Instructional Operations Committee and has planned and volunteered at numerous campus and community events.  Dr. McIntosh, originally from Ohio, earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Miami University in Anthropology. Then proceeded to receive two Master’s Degrees, the first from the City University of New York in Anthropology, and the second from NMSU – Las Cruces in History, with a graduate minor in Archaeology. In 2022, he graduated from the University of Santa Barbara with a Ph.D. in History. During his time in California, he taught courses in various areas, including, History, Academic Writing, and Chicano Studies. 

Zane Biebelle, Professor of English and member of the  Mountain Lion PRIDE Teaching Award Committee at SENMC, said “The student nominations made it clear that Dr. David McIntosh embodies the college's values in his teaching, and the committee was pleased to award him the first SENMC Mountain Lion PRIDE Teaching Award. He is an asset to our students and the college as a whole.” 

To be considered for the award, faculty members undergo a rigorous nomination process. SENMC students nominate a faculty member by submitting a paragraph explaining why the professor stands out as an excellent faculty member and if they embody one or more of our Institutional Values. When the nomination period closes, an awards committee made up of three former teaching award winners, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, one student government representative, and one PTK officer, meet to review the nominations. To be selected, nominated faculty members are requested to provide the following: student evaluations from the fall semester, a brief teaching philosophy that addresses the way the instructor incorporates institutional values in the classroom, and a one page, double spaced document or a three-to-five-minute video recording examples of innovative assignments or lessons. 

Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mickey Best stated “Dr. McIntosh, as the first recipient of the SENMC Mountain Lion PRIDE Teaching Award, exemplifies the spirit of the institution’s vision.  His teaching and scholarship, his service to the institution and colleagues, and especially his commitment to students shines through his work each and every day.  He is well deserving of this recognition.” 

Dr. David McIntosh will speak at SENMC’s Commencement Ceremony held on Friday, May 10th at 6 PM at the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts And Exhibition Center.
