Southeast New Mexico College Hosts Roundtable Discussion with Congressman Gabe Vasquez
(CARLSBAD, NM) Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) hosted a roundtable discussion with Congressman Gabe Vasquez on August 6, 2024 to discuss adult education, workforce development, integrated education training, the need for funding to increase support services, current and future focus, and challenges The roundtable included Congressman Gabe Vasquez, Cynthia Hull, District Director for the Honorable Gabe Vasquez, Dr. Monty Harris, SENMC Vice President of Workforce Development, Dr. Frosso Seitaridou, SENMC Vice President of Academic Affairs, Mrs. Misty McCormack, SENMC Adult Education Director, Marcela Diaz, Somos Un Pueblo Unido Executive Director, and featured special testimonies from Somos Un Pueblo Unido members Vicenta Garcia, Alejandro Mendez, and Manuela Olivas.
SENMC Adult Education Director, Misty McCormack, stated, “With the continued support from our state and federal legislators, as well as our partnering agencies, we can expand our adult education services to increase literacy rates and workforce readiness within our communities.”
“New Mexico has the potential to become a more inclusive state that recognizes the value of a diverse workforce and how immigrants play a crucial role in our economy,” said Marcela Díaz, Executive Director of Somos Un Pueblo Unido. "We can create a stronger and more prosperous state and shape the future of working families by working together to strengthen the workforce development system by providing more ESL, high school equivalency, integrated education training, and industry sector training programs for “difficult to reach” workers, as well as more support services for those who want to enroll in these programs.” Diaz Continued.”
